mirrormask

watched the show today with pig at the theatre. FINALLY the show comes to town. *lol* It was screened in this historical theatre which was totally GORGEOUS inside, reminiscent of the german/russian palaces of old. Gorgeous. I could be wearing a ball gown and a masque and I would fit right in with the architecture! Pity i didn't have a camera, and pig's pda cam wasn't really up to the job *lol* Quite the place to watch Mirrormask, seriously. Very fantastical. *lol*

cast

quite a good cast, though all virtual unknowns. But they really made the show come alive. i only had some problems understanding what they were saying at some instances, so some of gaiman's brillance was kinda lost on me *sheepish grin* haha

cinematography/art

Gorgeous!!!!! Dave Mckean at his most resourceful and interesting, I must say, considering how they managed to squeeze in so many special effects and fantastical imagery on an incredibly low budget. There were sphinxes with human faces...castles that seemed to be structurally unsound...things like that. stuff that only comes out of your imagination. But very refreshing. My favourite scene was when they had to tell the story of the two kingdoms. Mckean did this totally cool thing with paper animation and a box that could expand into a little paper story. Very resourceful!!!

script/story

i felt the entire thing was a little lacking in this area. The story was oversimplified. Sorta like Gaiman's kid stories. There were times when you didn't really know where the story was going. And times where you could get lost since you didn't really understand what was happening. Things tended to jump around a little. But perhaps it was because the entire thing was so unconventional that it took a bit of getting used to, and hence you tended to find it hard to understand sometimes. *lol* pig found the whole thing very puzzling, and i have to agree, there are parts which are really mind boggling or so weird that you need to frantically catch up to understand it. I still think Gaiman is better on paper, when you can read and reread his words to fully appreciate what he is trying to say.

music

NICE. VERY NICE. I loved the soundtrack. My favourite was the spooky cover of Carpenters' Close To You. Gorgeous ^^

final verdict

watch it if you're a Gaiman/Mckean fan, just to see what their maiden movie foray was like. You will definiely appreciate the art and music. As for script, to each his own I guess. I think how much you enjoy depends on how much you understand ^^

So yeah, that's it. ^^ Thanks for all the nice memories in the post below!! If you haven't written, please do ^^ i will check back regularly *haha* I'm really really keen to know what you guys write. *grin* And thanks too for the nice comments on this blog and the guestbook ^^ much appreciated ^^
