Wednesday, July 09, 2003More RecsJanny Wurts - The Wars Of Light And Shadow ooooh. A wonderful wonderful masterpiece. ^^ Currently published up to book six out of ten planned books in the series, this is a definite epic. Each book is about the length of two LOTR books. And yes, the font is just as small. ^^;; However, the story is so intense and the characters so complex that you just get caught up in the excitement. Trust me. Once started, you wouldn't be able to put the book down. The basic story is that two half brothers, Lysaer, Lord Of Llight, and Arithon, Master Of Shadows, were exiled to another world due to various circumstances. Their arrival in this world, Atheras, hails the fufilment of the Prophecy, where the Curse of the Mistwraith will be banished forever. However, upon banishment of the Mistwraith, the brothers suffered the bout of the curse, and were doomed to fight each other to the death if they ever meet. All books basically track the story of the great wars that followed after their arrival in Atheras. Some reasons why you definitely should read this: 1. this entire arc is the result of more than 10 years of careful planning. So, unlike JKR's lacklustre schtick (*mutter*), you're getting a story which gears towards a definitive end, has few loopholes, and characters whose personalities develop together with the story in a meaningful way. And people Die For A Reason. 2. The characters, as I said earlier, are very very complex. Judging by the names of the characters, you'd think it's the basic Light vs Dark thing. But no. This time, it's the Master of the Shadows that is good, and the Lord Of Light who is twisted. Aside from that, you see the struggles within them as they come to terms with various issues thrown to them. Lysaer's innate sense of justice is twisted to make him believe that killing his brother is for the good of Atheras. Arithon, though grossly misunderstood, nevertheless tries his best to break the curse between them. There's lots more, but writng them all would take a long time ^^; 3. The author is one of the few who draws her own artwork. So you get to see very accurate renditions of the characters in the stories. Besides, her version of Lysaer and Arithon is rather droolsome. ;P 4. There's magic, unicorns, faerie and centaurs thrown in. Not to mention old socerers with fat hedonistic apprentices, ghost sorcerors, bards and lots of moral struggles, war and a lilttle romance thrown in. The plot has everything needed to make it a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The only problem is that the series is of yet unfinished. *sigh* I'd have to wait SO LONG!!! ^^;;; Yup, yup. So read it ^^ You have to ^^ Rhapsody Nope, nope, not a book. This is an italian progressive rock band. PL actually mentioned them to me before, but I never had a chance to try them until now. Surprisingly, they're not that hard after all. And their songs are interesting. Just look at the titles and you'll see what i mean. Things like Forest Of Unicorns, Power of the Dragonflame, Symphony Of The Enchanted Lands etc etc. ^^ Fantasy fans might want to give this band a try ^^ I found the music interesting, although there would bit some noisy bits, since it is a rock band ^^;; stardusted at 3:39 AM | link? 0 Call me number 1!© sephirot productions 2008 |
