malena

Gee, did anyone catch this movie which aired on Central last night? It's a beautiful spanish movie starring Monica Belluci. Yes, Persephone in Matrix Reloaded ^^ The basic story is about this married woman, Malena (Monica Belluci), whose husband left to fight the war with the allied forces. The story is set in Sicily, during WWII. The interesting thing about this movie is that, although it is a biography of a notorious temptress/prostitute, it does not portray her life story in the usual way. You see her life through two views, that of a gangly, lovestruck teenager, and that of the people in the town. It begins when Malena's husband leaves. Not long after, she receives news that he has died. And so, the town peope see her begin to dress seductively, wooing men and getting into several scandals with the german nazi troops that invade the town. They see all this, and they curse her openly. The lovestruck boy, however, who has spent half his time spying on her, sees something else. He sees a woman who hates what she is doing, but has no choice as she is a widow, and it is dangerous to be a beautiful widow during war.

I realy loved this movie. It was a very beautiful portrayal of a seeming temptress, and the gangly boy rmanaged to give the viewer lots of perspective on the woman. You see the inherent jealousy the town women have for her beauty, and you see the immense courage in Malena as she faces the crowd of hateful eyes everyday. Monica Belluci was a wonderful actress here. Her facial expressions were so subtle, and yet they managed to convey a vast array of emotions in just one glance. Gosh. I'd loe to watch it again ^^ It's one of those artsy shows that need no explanation, dealing with common issues, and yet being able to give a fresh take on them. ^^
