++The Pianist++

Just went to watch this movie a few days ago with my mom, since I heard they were performing Chopin's Nocturnes and all. I went in expecting a certain standard, and I must say the movie was every bit as good, if not better than what I imagined. Firstly, there's the music. Chopin's piano pieces were woven rather skilfully into the movie tapestry, and suited that melancholic mood perfectly. There were some brief humourous scenes, but otherwise everything else was terribly depressing. I couldn't bear to watch those scenes where the soldiers just shot people, and laughed >.< Then there was a scene of a man licking food off the floor, a crazy woman blabbering the same question over and over again to passerbys - "Have you seen my husband? He's very handsome, and has a goatee. He's about this tall...No? Oh..I'm so sorry to take up your time. But please, if you see him, tell me, please?" >.< Very very depressing. But the potrayal of the Warsaw Ghetto and the Nazi Occupation here was very different from Spielberg's Schindler's List. Schindler's List tended towards the shocking, throwing scene after scene of gruesome footage to the audience. I remember the naked people being herded by the German soldiers. Had nightmares for some time after that >.< Pianist however, is rather detached. It's like you're seeing everything through tinted glasses. People just die quietly in front of you. No screaming, no nothing. Just people dropping over. And that makes it all the more terrifying. Otherwise, I really loved the show for the terrific cinematography. Lovely.

Of course, the actors were a big part of the movie too ^^ The lead guy had this constant woeful look on his face throughout the entire movie. He really looked like he had lost everything. I remember reading this interview where he mentioned that he sold his house, his car, and even dumped his girlfriend to understand what it meant to have lost everything. Crazy guy. ^^;;;;; But i must say he played the piano very convincingly. He has beautiful long fingers.

Verdict: Go watch it. It's worth every single dollar. Doubly so if you love Chopin's music. I recommend staying to watch the credits, since the entire credits features a professional pianist performing one of Chopin's symphonies. And it's the entire song in surrond sound. Nice. ^^ Unless, of course, you'd rather not watch such depressing movies ^^;; Then don't watch it. Oh, and for those who are interested, the book behind this story is a very enjoyable read. It goes by the same title as the movie.
